Golden Horizons – 14 Days Cairo and Dahabiya Nile Cruise

This is a 14-day, 13-night journey from Aswan all the way to Cairo aboard our dahabiya — a traditional wooden sailing boat, not a floating hotel. You keep the same cabin, the same crew and the same small group for almost two weeks, while the Nile does the driving.

Most people who book a Cairo and Nile cruise package get two holidays stitched together: a few rushed days of pyramids, a flight, then four nights on a large ship between Luxor and Aswan. It works. It also means you see the famous half of Egypt and sail past the rest of it at speed, usually with two hundred other people queuing for the same buffet.

We built Golden Horizons for travellers who want the other version. Temples that most itineraries skip entirely — Abydos, Dendera, El Kab, Tel el-Amarna — sit naturally on your route, because you are actually sailing past them rather than flying over them.

If you have been comparing Cairo and Nile cruise itineraries and quietly wondering whether there is a version with fewer crowds and more Egypt in it, this is our answer. Here is exactly what it includes, day by day, and what it does not.

That last line deserves a note, because “from” means exactly that. Your final quotation depends on the cabin you choose and the departure you want, which is precisely the sort of thing our reservations team can confirm for you once you send an enquiry.

Why Sail Aswan to Cairo Instead of the Usual Luxor Loop?

A standard Cairo Luxor Aswan Nile cruise covers the stretch between Luxor and Aswan — Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Philae. Wonderful sites, all of them, and you will visit them with us too.

But Egypt does not stop north of Luxor. Between Luxor and Cairo lie Dendera, Abydos, Tel el-Amarna and the Fayoum, plus a long ribbon of river villages where daily life looks much as it has for generations. Large ships rarely make that passage. A dahabiya can, and does.

So instead of a package that ends when the temples run out, you get one where the river keeps unfolding: you begin in Aswan, drift north with the current, and arrive in Cairo by water. Then, and only then, do you stand in front of the Pyramids. It is a far better final act than starting with them.

Day 1 – A Grand Arrival in Aswan

We meet you at the airport or your hotel and start immediately, because Aswan rewards early risers and late arrivals equally. First stop is the Temple of Philae, dedicated to the goddess Isis and beautifully preserved on its island setting. Then the Aswan High Dam, the piece of modern engineering that tamed the river you are about to sail.

By afternoon you board the dahabiya. The sails fill, the breeze picks up, and we make for Kom Ombo, where you explore the unusual double temple dedicated to Sobek the crocodile god and Horus the falcon god, under moonlight. We anchor for the night at Maniha Island.

Day 2 – Silsila’s Quarries and Edfu’s Magic

Morning starts with water sounds rather than alarm clocks. We stop at Gebel el-Silsila, where ancient Egyptians quarried the stone for much of what you will see later in the trip. Standing in the cut rock, the sheer labour behind Egypt’s monuments becomes obvious in a way no museum caption manages.

Sailing on, we call at Bassao Island, a river village where you may find a farmer working his crops or children playing along the bank. By afternoon we reach Edfu Temple, one of Egypt’s best-preserved, dedicated to Horus. Overnight at Ramady Island.

Day 3 – The Tombs of El Kab and the Wonders of Esna

We step ashore at El Kab, where tombs cut into desert cliffs show scenes of fishing, farming and feasting that feel oddly familiar across four thousand years. Back aboard, the passage through the Esna Lock is a small spectacle of its own. In Esna you visit the Temple of Khnum, the ram-headed creator god. Overnight in Esna.

Day 4 – Luxor, the Heart of Ancient Egypt

We sail into the city often called the world’s greatest open-air museum. In the afternoon you explore the Karnak Temple complex, with its towering columns and sacred lake. As the light drops, Luxor Temple comes alive — sandstone catching a golden sunset, dynasty layered on dynasty. Overnight in Luxor.

Days 5–6 – Dendera and the Sail to Naga Hammadi

The Temple of Hathor at Dendera, goddess of love and joy, is exceptionally well preserved. Its ceilings still hold original colour, which is genuinely difficult to process when you are standing underneath it. In the afternoon the dahabiya sails on to Naga Hammadi, where we anchor for the night.

Day 7 – Abydos, a Sacred Journey

Abydos is one of Egypt’s holiest cities, and the Temple of Seti I is a masterpiece of carved relief. Beside it lies the Osireion, the mysterious structure linked to the cult of Osiris. We sail on to Sohag and spend the night on board.

Days 9–12 – Tel el-Amarna to the Fayoum

These are the days that make this a 14 day Cairo and Nile cruise rather than a week-long one, and they are our favourites. Working north from Assiut towards the Fayoum, the itinerary takes in:

  • Tel el-Amarna, the city of Akhenaten, with tombs and ruins from the brief, strange, fascinating Amarna Period
  • Minya, where life along the Nile feels both timeless and unhurried
  • Fayoum Oasis, home to the Valley of the Whales and restful Lake Qarun
Turquoise Dahabiya sailing the Nile with sails fully raised
Between sites, the boat becomes the point: long stretches of sailing at the speed of wind.

Between sites, the boat becomes the point. Long stretches of sailing, meals on deck, conversation, and the particular pleasure of watching Egypt scroll past at the speed of wind.

Day 13 – Sailing into Cairo

Your dahabiya arrives in the capital, a city where ancient wonders sit alongside very modern energy. Arriving by river gives Cairo a different scale. You have earned it slowly.

Day 14 – Cairo’s Timeless Icons

The finale: the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, keeping watch as they have for millennia. Then the Grand Egyptian Museum, home to Egypt’s greatest treasures, including Tutankhamun’s golden mask.

Visitor photographing the Great Pyramids of Giza on a clear day

Two weeks earlier you were looking at the quarries where the stone came from. Now you are looking at what they built with it. That circle closing is the whole reason we run this route in this direction.

Life on Board: Your Cabin for 13 Nights

One of the quiet luxuries of a private dahabiya Nile cruise is that you unpack once. No hotel-hopping, no repacking at 5 a.m., no wondering which city your shampoo is in.

Shaded deck lounge area with seating and small plunge pool on board the dahabiya
The shaded deck lounge on board — part of the same journey, whichever cabin you choose.
Suite bedroom on board the dahabiya with large windows overlooking the Nile

Suites

Best suited to couples, honeymooners, and travellers wanting the most space on board.

Standard twin cabin on board the dahabiya with two beds

Standard Rooms

Travellers who want the same route and service in a classic cabin.

Both cabin types are part of the same journey, the same meals, the same guiding, and the same deck at sunset. Tell us which you prefer when you enquire and we will confirm availability for your dates.

What’s Included, and What’s Not

We would rather be clear than clever here. No package is “all-inclusive” in every sense of the word, and any operator promising otherwise is usually hiding the details further down the page.

✅ Price Includes

  • 13 nights on a full board basis (breakfast, lunch and dinner)
  • Expert archaeologist guide for all sightseeing tours
  • Entrance fees to all attractions mentioned in the itinerary
  • All transfers in a modern, air-conditioned deluxe vehicle
  • Complimentary soft drinks throughout the journey
  • Onboard activities and evening entertainment

❌ Price Excludes

  • Gratuities
  • Any private expenses
  • Alcoholic drinks

Two things worth underlining, because they are where travellers usually get stung elsewhere. Entrance fees are included for the sites listed in this itinerary — across fourteen days and this many temples, that is not a small line item. And your guide is an archaeologist, with you for all sightseeing, not a different local guide handed over at each stop.

Anything not listed above (international flights, domestic flights, visas, travel insurance, optional excursions) is not part of the published package. If you need us to arrange or advise on any of it, ask in your enquiry and we will tell you straight.

How This Compares With Our Shorter Cruises

Not everyone has fourteen days. Here is where Golden Horizons sits within our range, so you can judge the value honestly.

Our CruiseDurationRouteFrom
Sacred Waters4 daysAswan to Esna€750
Elegant Scape7 daysLuxor – Qena – Aswan€1,500
Royal Nile Escape11 daysLuxor to Cairo€3,000
Golden Horizons14 daysAswan to Cairo€3,500
Egypt Solar Eclipse Cruise 2027——€3,300

Read that table sideways and the logic appears: the extra €500 between our 11-day and 14-day journeys buys you the entire southern stretch — Philae, the High Dam, Kom Ombo, Silsila, Edfu, El Kab and Esna — plus two additional nights on board. For travellers flying long-haul from the USA, Canada, the UK, Europe or Australia, that is usually the better maths.

Plan Your Nile Journey

Fill in the enquiry form with your name, email and a few words about the trip you have in mind — your preferred dates, cabin type, and who is travelling. Our team will send you the current availability, the full cost for your group, and honest answers to anything you still want to check.

    Who This Journey Suits

    • Couples and honeymooners — two weeks, one cabin, an entire river. Suites are the natural choice.
    • First-time visitors to Egypt who want depth rather than a checklist, and who would rather not rush the Pyramids on day two of jet lag.
    • Small groups and families travelling together who want private, guided touring with the same team throughout.
    • Long-haul travellers from the US, Canada and Australia, for whom a 14-day itinerary justifies the flight far better than a 7-day one.
    • Returning visitors who have already done Luxor to Aswan and want Abydos, Dendera, Amarna and the Fayoum.

Excellent Trip On this second visit to Egypt, we traveled on this boat on the Nile from Luxor to Aswan. It was a small and fine boat with room for about 20 people. Downstairs were the luxurious rooms with windows and upstairs was an open area with a dining table, benches, loungers and a pool. The crew and owner were very friendly, the food was excellent and on three of the five evenings we were invited to dance, which created a great sense of community.A trip with this ship and the crew is definitely recommended.

Wonderful days and nights on the Nile We are completely satisfied! The food has excellent high quality. The service Team is polite, openminded, helpful, charming, loving. They enlightened us with live drumming, chanting and dancing during three evenings, which created an athmosphere of inclusion for all guests who wanted to join. The ship is light, spacious, clean, offering occasions to sit together, talk, play or laying on the sofa shady or sunny.Claudia & Christian

Great and Relaxing Trip Up the Nile The Turquoise is a very charming Dahabiya. The rooms are clean and white-modern, with comfortable big beds in the suites and twins in the cabins. It probably would have been nice to have some cabins with double/queen beds. The pillows were way too thick and need most of the stuffing to be taken out, or ideally a many new pillows with varying thickness and firmness. There should probably have been a small sofa or love seat in the suites. The rooms all have very big windows, which makes for excellent views of the Nile. The salon / indoor living room should have a projector on one wall for movie nights. The crew was helpful and accommodating. They removed the tarpaulin covers over the pool at my request, in hopes that the sun would heat the pool, however above that tarp was a big solar panel, and so the sun never even shone in the pool. Mohammed (the owner) even got us two kayaks to use, which was absolutely fantastic and personal service, and really a great way to relax. The pool was freezing cold in the winter, and ideally should have some kind of heating system for high season, as even after a long day of sightseeing, it was too cold to be enjoyable. Perhaps a small heating element could be placed in the pool during the day when we go on tour, and then when we come back in late afternoon the water would be warm. The food was good, although maybe the breakfast was a bit lacking in different selections. Most of our group wanted a proper coffee maker, not just instant coffee. Alcohol was a bit difficult and expensive to come by, but eventually a member of the crew helped us to find some at expensive rates. The sights were amazing and our guide, Dr. Mo, was incredibly knowledgeable and personable. However, we were almost tired of seeing temples by the end of the trip; it might be a good idea to have a rest day in the middle of the trip to lay on deck, read, kayak, watch movies, etc. Overall, a great experience, very peaceful and enjoyable, and highly recommended.

Ready to Sail Aswan to Cairo?

Fourteen days. Thirteen nights aboard a traditional dahabiya. One guide, one crew, one cabin, and a route that carries you from the temples of Nubia to the Pyramids of Giza the slow way, the way the river always intended.

The Nile has been carrying travellers north for five thousand years. It is fairly good at it by now. We would love to have you aboard.
