Sacred Waters: our 4 day Dahabiya Nile cruise, Aswan to Esna

This is our short, dense route — the one to choose if you’ve got a week in Egypt and want Cairo and the Nile without rushing either. Boarding is in Aswan; you finish in Luxor.
Day 1 — Philae Temple, Kom Ombo, Maniha Island. Your private guide meets you at your Aswan hotel or the airport. First stop is Philae Temple, moved to Agilkia Island to save it from rising water, dedicated to Isis — goddess of love, healing and magic. Then you board, settle into your cabin, meet the crew and eat lunch as the sails fill. The afternoon brings Kom Ombo, Egypt’s unusual double temple shared between Horus the falcon god and Sobek the crocodile god, with its symmetrical layout and famous medical carvings. Dinner on deck, then a quiet night moored at Maniha Island.
Day 2 — Gebel El Silsila, Bassao Island, Al Fawza. Breakfast on the sun deck, then Gebel El Silsila, the sandstone quarry that supplied the stone for much of ancient Egypt’s temple building. Cliffs, rock-cut shrines, and an optional kayaking session if you’d like to see it from water level. Later, Bassao Island — a village where daily life still runs on the river’s rhythm. Afternoon tea as you sail toward Al Fawza Island, dinner at sunset, overnight at Al Fawza / Al Saraj.
Day 3 — Edfu and Badr Village. Morning at the Temple of Horus in Edfu, one of the best-preserved temples in the country: towering pylons, intact halls, carvings that still read clearly after two thousand years. Then an afternoon of pure sailing — farmers in the fields, fishermen working the shallows, children waving from the bank. Dinner and overnight near Badr Village, close to Esna.
Day 4 — Esna, Luxor, Valley of the Kings. A last breakfast on deck before visiting the Temple of Esna, dedicated to Khnum, the ram-headed god who shaped humanity on a potter’s wheel — worth it for the astronomical ceiling alone. Private transfer to Luxor, then the Valley of the Kings, burial place of Tutankhamun, Seti I and Ramesses II. We drop you at your Luxor hotel or Luxor International Airport.

Day 1 is the one that sells this itinerary. Karnak is the largest religious complex ever built, developed across roughly two thousand years of pharaohs. The Valley of the Kings follows the same morning. Then a short drive to Esna, and the rest of your week slows right down.

Seven days buys you something the four and five-day routes can’t: Dendera. Very few Nile itineraries sail north to Qena first, and it’s the reason regular Egypt visitors book this one.
- Day 1 — Luxor welcome, Karnak and Luxor Temples, board in the afternoon, sail north, overnight in Qena.
- Day 2 — Dendera Temple, dedicated to Hathor, goddess of love and beauty, and among the best-preserved in Egypt. Sail back toward Luxor with a stop at the village of Garagos. Overnight in Luxor.
- Day 3 — Luxor’s West Bank: Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut’s Temple against the cliffs. Sail south to Esna in the late afternoon.
- Day 4 — Through the Esna Lock, the Temple of Esna, a walk through town, then El Kab and its cliff tombs linked to Nekhbet, the vulture goddess. Overnight at Imam Island.
- Day 5 — Edfu Temple, then Bassao Island. Mooring near the sandstone cliffs of El Selsela.
- Day 6 — The El Selsela quarries, Kom Ombo Temple, and the camel market at Daraw. Overnight at Herdiab Island.
- Day 7 — Breakfast as you sail into Aswan, check out, and finish at Philae Temple before your onward transfer.

What’s the best time of year for a Nile cruise?
October to April gives the mildest weather and the most comfortable sightseeing conditions. Winter is the sweet spot for temple days.
How long does a typical Nile cruise last?
Across the industry, most run 3–7 nights, and four-night Luxor–Aswan itineraries are the most common. Ours run from 3 nights up to 14 days.
Which route is better, Luxor to Aswan or Aswan to Luxor?
Luxor to Aswan is the default direction and generally offers the best sites-per-night ratio. Aswan to Luxor tends to be shorter and cheaper while covering fewer sites. We sail both: Serenity Retreat goes Esna → Aswan, Sacred Waters goes Aswan → Esna.
Are meals and excursions included?
On our cruises, yes — full board, guided temple visits, entrance fees, transfers and soft drinks. Alcohol, gratuities and personal expenses are not.
What are the best luxury Nile cruise companies?
