Solar Eclipse 2027 Cruise: Eight Days on the Nile, Six Minutes in the Dark

On 2 August 2027, the Moon’s shadow sweeps across southern Egypt for 6 minutes and 23 seconds of totality — the longest total solar eclipse of the century. Sail the Nile aboard the Turquoise Dahabiya and watch it unfold over Luxor.

Aug 2, 2027 — Eclipse Date 6m 23s — Totality 8 Days — Aswan – Luxor From €3,300 — Per Person

There is a particular kind of traveller who reads a date and immediately starts calculating. Monday, August 2, 2027. If that date is already circled somewhere in your calendar, you know exactly why.

On that afternoon, the Moon’s shadow will sweep across southern Egypt and hold there longer than anywhere else on Earth — 6 minutes and 23 seconds of total darkness, with maximum totality over Luxor at approximately 1:10 PM.

Six minutes doesn’t sound long. Ask anyone who has stood inside a total eclipse and they’ll tell you it’s an eternity and a blink at the same time.

Luxor Temple illuminated at sunset

We’re Turquoise Dahabiya, and we sail the stretch of river between Aswan and Luxor for a living. When we mapped the 2027 path of totality against our own sailing route, the overlap was almost comical — the shadow’s centre line runs directly over the ground we already know intimately. So we built a journey around it: an 8-day solar eclipse 2027 cruise aboard a private Dahabiya, with the itinerary deliberately anchored to eclipse day.

This page tells you exactly what that journey involves. No inflated promises, no vague poetry about “the experience of a lifetime.” Just the route, the dates, the sites, what’s included, what isn’t, and what we can and can’t confirm yet.

The Centreline

Why Luxor Is the Address for the 2027 Total Eclipse Cruise

Luxor sits close to the centre of the path of totality. Being near the centre line matters enormously — it’s the difference between a few seconds of darkness at the edge and the full six-minute-plus duration at the heart.

Then there’s the sky itself. Egypt in early August is dry, hot, and reliably clear. For an event that lasts a handful of minutes and can be ruined by a single obliging cloud, that reliability is worth more than any amenity.

And finally, there’s the setting. You could watch this eclipse from a car park. You could also watch it from the Luxor West Bank, surrounded by mortuary temples built by people who tracked the sun’s movements with unnerving precision three thousand years ago. Both are technically the same eclipse. Only one of them tells a story.

We’ve written more about the astronomy and the location in our Luxor Eclipse 2027 guide and our broader Egypt solar eclipse tour overview, if you’d like the background before you go further.

The 2027 Eclipse Cruise at a Glance

Join an extraordinary 7-night cruise aboard the elegant Turquoise Dahabiya and experience one of the rarest astronomical events of our lifetime. On 2 August 2027, the Moon’s shadow will pass directly across southern Egypt, creating the longest total solar eclipse visible anywhere on Earth.

This journey combines the wonders of Ancient Egypt with the intimacy of a luxury Dahabiya sailing experience — magnificent temples, legendary archaeological sites, and the eclipse itself from one of the world’s most sought-after viewing locations.

A note on the viewing line: the arrangement is currently listed as Luxor West Bank / Dahabiya, to be confirmed. The final call depends on conditions and access closer to the date. When you enquire, our team will tell you exactly where that stands at the time you ask.

Same with the price. From €3,300 is the published starting figure. Cabin category, occupancy and current availability all affect what you’d actually pay, so the enquiry form is where you get the real number rather than a guess from a web page.

Nile or Mediterranean?

Nile Cruise or Mediterranean Ship? An Honest Comparison

If you’ve been researching 2027 eclipse cruise packages, you’ve almost certainly seen ocean sailings advertised — Mediterranean routes, ships repositioning off southern Spain, itineraries touching Morocco, Tunisia, Gibraltar, Barcelona, Athens. These exist, and for some travellers they make sense.

Sailing on the Nile River

We don’t operate any of them. We sail the Nile, and we’d rather be straightforward about that than pretend to be something we’re not. Here’s how the two approaches genuinely differ:

ConsiderationOcean Eclipse CruiseOur Nile Dahabiya Eclipse Cruise
Totality durationVaries by ship position; generally shorter6 min 23 sec over Luxor
Weather riskOpen-sea cloud cover is possibleDry, typically clear Upper Egyptian summer
Ship sizeOften several hundred to several thousand passengersPrivate Dahabiya, limited guests
What else you seeEuropean and North African portsAbu Simbel, Philae, Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Dendera
Vessel movementShip repositions to meet the shadowFixed land-and-river route built around eclipse day

A large ship gives you an open horizon. A Dahabiya gives you Egypt. If the eclipse is the reason for the trip but the destination is what you’ll remember afterwards, the choice tends to make itself. Our comparison of a Dahabiya versus a standard Nile cruise ship goes deeper into what small-vessel sailing actually feels like day to day.

What’s Included

What’s Included — and What Isn’t

Included

  • Private Dahabiya accommodation, 7 nights (double cabin, en-suite)
  • All meals on board — breakfast, lunch and dinner daily
  • Expert archaeologist guide for all sightseeing
  • Entrance fees to all attractions in the itinerary
  • All transfers in a modern, air-conditioned deluxe vehicle

Not Included

  • Gratuities
  • Any private expenses
  • Alcoholic drinks
The archaeologist guide is worth pausing on. Every site on this itinerary is led by a specialist — not a general guide reading from a script. At Dendera, at Deir el-Medina, in the Valley of the Kings, that difference is the difference between looking at old stone and understanding it.
Entrance fees to all listed attractions are covered, which removes the usual daily arithmetic of Egyptian sightseeing. And all meals are on board, which in early August — when Luxor afternoons take the heat seriously — is a genuine relief.
Anything not on this list — flights, visas, optional extras — isn’t included. Ask us and we’ll tell you exactly what applies to your booking. For general trip prep, see our Egypt Nile cruise tips and our note on travelling safely in Egypt.

Life on Board

Accommodation and Life on Board

You’re aboard a private Dahabiya for seven nights in a double, en-suite cabin. We offer both Suites and Standard Rooms — the enquiry form is the right place to discuss which suits you and what’s available for these specific dates.

Nile River sailing

A Dahabiya is a traditional twin-masted sailing vessel. No engine noise as its defining soundtrack, no thousand-passenger buffet, no queue for the gangway. Our Life On Board page covers the daily rhythm in detail, and if you’re weighing sailing vessels generally, our felucca versus Dahabiya comparison is a useful primer.

Availability is intentionally limited. That’s not a scarcity tactic — it’s the vessel. A Dahabiya carries a small number of guests by design, and for a fixed-date event that cannot be repeated, the arithmetic is simply unforgiving.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Luxor one of the best places to watch the 2027 solar eclipse?+

Luxor lies near the centre of the eclipse path of totality, allowing visitors to experience one of the longest durations of complete darkness during the event. Combined with Egypt’s typically clear summer skies and Luxor’s remarkable historical setting, it offers an exceptional location for eclipse viewing.

When should I book?+

As early as possible. The eclipse is expected to attract travellers from around the world and Dahabiya capacity is limited. Availability will become increasingly limited as the event approaches.

What are the exact dates?+

Wednesday, July 28 to Wednesday, August 4, 2027 — eight days, seven nights aboard.

How long does totality last?+

6 minutes and 23 seconds over Luxor, with maximum eclipse at approximately 1:10 PM on August 2.

Where exactly will we watch the eclipse from?+

Listed as Luxor West Bank / Dahabiya, currently to be confirmed. We’ll notify booked guests once the location is finalised.

Can the itinerary be customised?+

The itinerary is designed around eclipse day and the timing is fixed. Minor additions are possible on arrival day.

Do you offer Mediterranean, Spain, or Morocco eclipse cruises?+

No. We operate this Nile Dahabiya journey in Egypt only.

The Short Version

August 2, 2027. One Afternoon. Six Minutes and Twenty-Three Seconds.

The 2027 total solar eclipse cruise we operate is an 8-day, 7-night private Dahabiya journey running July 28 to August 4, 2027, from Aswan up to Luxor and Qena, priced from €3,300. It puts you near the centre of the path of totality for 6 minutes and 23 seconds of darkness on August 2 — the longest of the century — and wraps that single afternoon inside a week of Abu Simbel, Philae, Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Medinet Habu, and Dendera’s astronomical ceiling.

Meals, entrance fees, transfers, and an archaeologist guide are included. Gratuities, private expenses, and alcohol are not. The schedule is fixed because the sky is fixed. Cabins are limited because a Dahabiya is small.

There will be other eclipses. There will not be another one like this within most of our lifetimes.
