There’s a question we get more than any other, and it’s never “which temple should I see?”
It’s “how many days do I actually need?”
Fair question. Egypt is not a country you can size up from a map. The distance between the Pyramids of Giza and the temples of Aswan is roughly the distance from London to Edinburgh — except the interesting bits aren’t at either end. They’re scattered along the whole stretch of river in between.
So instead of one “best Egypt itinerary,” we sail five different ones, ranging from four days to fourteen. Below you’ll find every route, what each one covers, what’s included, who it suits, and what it costs. Then you can pick the shape of trip that fits your holiday — not the other way round.

Every one of these sails on a dahabiya — a traditional wooden sailing boat, moved by wind rather than engine noise. That’s not a styling detail. It’s why we can moor at islands and villages the large cruise fleet sails straight past.
The Short Egypt Itinerary: 4 Days, Aswan to Esna

If your Egypt trip is really a Cairo trip with a few days spare, this is the one that fits. Four days, three nights, and the densest stretch of temples on the river.

Two things travellers routinely underestimate here. First, Day 2 is the quiet gem — Gebel El Silsila is where the sandstone for Egypt’s greatest temples was actually cut, and almost nobody goes. Second, this itinerary still ends with the Valley of the Kings, so you’re not trading the headline sites for the hidden ones.
Short trip. Not a shallow one.
The Classic Five-Day Egypt Itinerary

Same river, opposite direction, and one extra night to breathe. This one starts on land in Luxor — an early 7:30am pick-up, Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings before lunch — then a one-hour drive to Esna where the dahabiya is waiting.

What makes the five-day version different isn’t an extra temple. It’s Bassao. You get a full morning there rather than a passing stop — weddings, fishing, schooling, how people actually earn a living on this river. Combined with the Daraw camel market on Day 4, it’s the most culturally weighted of our short itineraries.
Worth knowing: Karnak is the largest religious building in the world. Starting there on Day 1 sets a very high bar for Day 2 — and Egypt clears it anyway.
The Seven-Day Egypt Itinerary: Both Directions from Luxor

Here’s where the itinerary gets clever. Most Nile routes run one way. This one sails north from Luxor to Qena first, then turns around and works its way south to Aswan — which means you get Dendera Temple, a site almost every one-week Egypt itinerary skips because it sits in the wrong direction.

Seven days is the sweet spot for a reason. You get Karnak and Luxor Temple and the West Bank and Dendera and Edfu and Kom Ombo and Philae — with genuine sailing time in between rather than a checklist sprint.
If you have one week for Egypt and you want the river to be the trip rather than a side excursion, this is our recommendation.
The Long Egypt Itinerary: 11 Days, Luxor to Cairo

This is the route almost nobody offers, because almost nobody sails it. North of Luxor the tourist fleet thins out entirely — and the eleven-day itinerary spends most of its time up there.

Egypt’s Christian heritage is the surprise on this route. The Red and White Monasteries, Deir Dronka, and Gabal El Teir — a site linked to the Holy Family’s journey — sit alongside Abydos and Amarna in a way no flight-based Egypt itinerary can replicate.
Two practical notes we’d rather you knew upfront: this journey operates with a minimum of 10 confirmed bookings, and its price excludes international and domestic airfare as well as gratuities. All timings are approximate and depend on sailing conditions.

Ending at Giza rather than starting there is deliberate. By the time you stand in front of the Pyramids on Day 14, you’ve already sailed past the quarries the stone came from and the temples the same civilisation built downstream. You arrive with context — and context is the thing most Egypt itineraries can’t sell you.

The 11-day Royal Nile Escape differs slightly: full board, guiding, entrance fees, transfers and soft drinks are included, while airfare and gratuities are excluded.
Two lines worth reading twice. Entrance fees are included — on a route with a dozen ticketed sites, that’s a significant number you won’t be handing over at gates. And your guide is a qualified archaeologist, present at every site, not a rotating local rep.
